Hajime Niwa ｜ Leather Artisan
 
1974　千葉県柏市生まれ
Born in Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan
幼い頃から工作や絵をかくことが大好きでした。15歳のとき、卒業文集に「10年後の自分・何かつくる仕事」と書いたことを覚えています。
From an early age, I loved making things and drawing.
I still remember writing in my graduation booklet at 15:
“My future self, ten years from now — doing a job where I create something.”
 
1997　明治大学卒業後、手工芸材料店に勤務
Worked at an art & craft supplies store after graduating from university
大学では経営学を学び スポーツに打ち込む一方で、古着のリメイクやバイクのカスタムが趣味でした。
この頃、革と出会い、かつて思い描いていた「つくる仕事」への道を選びます。手工芸材料店では、3年間レザークラフトを担当しました。
After graduating from university with a degree in Business Administration, I began working at an art and craft supplies store.
During my university years, I devoted much of my time to sports, while also enjoying remaking vintage clothing and customizing motorcycles.
It was around this time that I first encountered leather, and chose a path that allowed me to pursue my long-held desire to create.
At the store, I was in charge of leathercraft for three years.
 
2000　革職人に師事
Studied under a leather artisan
小さな工房で、静かにひとり作業する姿と、その手から産み出されるものに強く心を動かされ、職人の世界に飛び込みました。
それは、15歳のときに思い描いてからちょうど10年後、25歳の時でした。
I was deeply moved by the sight of a craftsman quietly working alone in a small atelier, and by the objects created by his hands.
This led me to step into the world of craftsmanship.
I was 25 — ten years after writing about my future. Just as I had imagined.
 
2003　NIWA LEATHERS 創業
Founded NIWA LEATHERS 
実家の1室から手探りでスタートしました。数ヶ月後、大手セレクトショップより声をかけていただき NL製品を取り扱っていただけることに。
その後数年間は、時間を惜しむように製作に没頭する日々を過ごしました。 同年、双子の弟もNL & DESIGNを創業。
I started in a small room in my family home, with no clear direction.
A few months later, I was approached by a major select shop to carry my work.
For the next several years, I devoted myself fully to making, often working late into the night.
That same year, my twin brother also founded NL & DESIGN, an architectural design studio.
 
2008　双子の家　完成
The Twins House (home & atelier) completed
多くの方に支えられ、兄弟の夢の結晶「双子の家」が完成しました。その後、2児の父となり、暮らしと製作が重なるこの場所での日々が始まりました。
With the support of many people, we completed “The Twins House,” a place that embodied our shared dream.
In time, I became a father of two, balancing both family life and work in this combined home and atelier.
   
2016　NL School スタート
Started NL Leatherworking Class 
レザークラフト教室を開始。
I began offering leatherworking classes at my atelier.
  
2019　アメリカ・カリフォルニアにてワークショップ開催
Held a workshop at Fine Leatherworking (California, USA)
Fine Leatherworking に招かれ、講習を行いました。
I was invited to conduct a leathercraft workshop there.
 
2023　20周年 
20th Anniversary
おかげさまで、創業20周年を迎えることができました。
Thanks to the support of many people, NIWA LEATHERS reached its 20th anniversary.
  
2024　アメリカ・カリフォルニアにて２度目のワークショップ開催
Held a second workshop at Fine Leatherworking (California, USA)
再び Fine Leatherworking にて講習を行いました。
Returned to Fine Leatherworking to conduct another workshop.
